About the book
Gloria Anzaldúa (1942–2004) was an American writer, philosopher and scholar of Chicana culture. Her work explores questions of language, culture, history, territory and identity.
First published in 1987, Borderlands / La Frontera: The New Mestiza combines essays, poetry, autobiographical writing, memoir and historical material.
Drawing on her experience of living on the border between Mexico and the United States, Anzaldúa considers the border not only as a geographical space, but also as a condition of existing between different languages, cultures and systems of belonging. The book explores how language, history, culture and geography shape individual and collective identities.
During the Reading Group, we will discuss a selected fragment from the book, focusing on questions of language, cultural intersection, memory, territory and identity.
The meeting is part of the September public programme accompanying Liza Kin’s exhibition ZONE.
